HANOL-MAHASU TEMPLE,Dehradun


The famous temple of Lord ‘Mahasu‘ is about 186 kms from Dehradun and is situated in the village Hanol lying on the eastern bank of river Tons.

The temple of the deity constructed in the ‘Huna’ architectural style elevated at 1429 mts. above sea level.

According to the legend a demon lived there and the villagers had to sacrifice a man a day for the demon.

In Mandrath, a devotee of Lord Shiva defied the custom and prayed lord Shiva. Deolari Devi another devotee and a resident of Hanol on being directed by Shiva sent her four sons to Mandrath and asked the man to plough his field.

After a long fight with the demon was killed, and the man while ploughing the field discovered four Shivlings – Maasu, Pavasi, Vasik and Chakla named after the four sons.

The villagers thereafter started worshipping Shiva as ‘Mahasu’.

Chandrabadni Temple,Dehradun

Situated 7 Km. from Dehradun on the Delhi road is the famous temple of Chandrabadni (Gautam Kund). According to the legend, this place was inhabited by Saint Gautam, his wife and daughter Anjani who are widely worshipped by the people.

It is believed that the daughter of heaven – Holy Ganga had manifested herself on the spot which is now popularly known as the Gautam Kund. Every year devotees, in large numbers take a dip in the holy kund. To spot is 2 km away from the main road.

Baisakhi is celebrated with great pomp and show here from 12th to 14th April every year.

Tibetian Market,Dehradun
